SILVERLINING, a 30M Sparkman & Stephens, isn’t just any yacht–it’s a vessel that’s sailed thousands of miles on expeditions, family adventures, and unforgettable journeys. Her owner tells us his experience on board this storied sloop which now has over a million euros invested in upgrades. She is now for sale and primed for the next chapter of exploration, are ready to write your own story?
1. The Dream: “Love at First Sight”
Q: What inspired you to buy SILVERLINING?
“From a young age, I was passionate about sailing… I envisioned a post-retirement scientific program centered around topics such as phytoplankton and microplastics… My wife, Kristin, was initially not comfortable on the water, so we needed a vessel that was safe, spacious enough for our extended family, and provided good comfort… In late 2017, we began searching for suitable candidates and soon encountered SilverLining. For both of us, it was love at first sight.”
Key Features That Stood Out:
- Designed by Sparkman & Stephens (Newport, Rhode Island, USA)
- Built to American Bureau of Shipping standards
- Aluminum hull and topside
- Italian-built Maxspar carbon mast and boom
- Hundeberg steering and Harken sailing systems powered by hydraulics
- Caterpillar engine and gensets
- Castoldi (now Williams) 16-foot diesel-jet tender

2. The 2022-2023 Refit (€1M+ Investment)
Q: What upgrades did you make?
“The upgrades and customizations made to SilverLining have significantly enhanced the vessel’s performance, safety, and comfort.”
Documented Upgrades Include:
- Navigation: Newer Raymarine Axiom systems with redundancy
- Communications: Upgraded for A1, A2, A3, and A4 areas operation
- Rigging: Complete standing and running rig replacement under Maxspar supervision
- Power: 4 kWp solar panels + 21 MG LiFePO4 batteries (24V/200Ah each)
- Mechanical: Full overhaul of main engine and two gensets (Caterpillar hours reset to zero)
- Safety: GMDSS-compliant systems installed
- Interior: New TVs, Sonos system, professional router/server, and galley upgrades
3. Performance and Handling
Q: How does SILVERLINING perform under sail and power?
“SilverLining has sailed without any issues in windspeeds up to 35 knots… achieving a maximum speed of 11.5 knots under sail. Under engine power, the most economical RPMs are around 1250 RPM, with a fuel consumption of between 20 and 22 liters per hour (7 knot average speed).”
Sea State Experience:
- Regularly handled significant wave heights (Hs) of 2.5 meters (4m max)
- High freeboard and weight provide stability in rough conditions
- “At no point did the crew and guests feel endangered by wind or sea state, even during the numerous squalls typical of Southeast Asia.”
4. Favorite Memories: Raja Ampat
Documented Destinations:
- Anambas Islands and Riau Archipelago (Indonesia)
- Palawan and surrounding islands (Philippines)
- Phuket waters (Thailand)
- Borneo (Malaysia)
- Bali, Lombok, Komodo, Flores to West Papua (Indonesia)
Owner’s Favorite: “Without a doubt, the best memories to date are from Raja Ampat in West Papua, Indonesia. The warm, pristine waters with exceptional corals and sea life set in an environment of untouched islands create a magical experience… Spending about two months in that area has left a lasting impression.
5. Why Sell? “Life Took a Different Turn”
Q: What’s motivating the sale?
“The decision was made to limit the cruising to the equatorial region between 15 degrees North and 10 degrees South… This adjustment cuts 1.5 years from the initial planning, now ending in December 2025, and for this reason the boat has been put up for sale. To date, May 2025, we have already sailed 16,500 miles under the Pacific Passion project.”
Ideal Owner:
- A family seeking safe, luxurious adventures
- A charter operator wanting a turnkey, upgraded yacht
- An explorer eyeing high-latitude expeditions (she’s built for it!)
Final Advice: “Slow Down and Let the Ocean Teach You”
“Owning SilverLining since 2018 has been an incredible journey… I will never regret purchasing SilverLining, as it allowed me to discover the world at a leisurely pace of 15 km/hour (a biker’s speed) and reach a state of tranquility and thoughtfulness.”
Advice for Next Owner: “Embrace the journey and cherish the moments spent on board. SilverLining is in top shape and offers a unique opportunity to explore the world.”
