What Is It Really Like to Own a Yacht in Saint-Tropez?

I’ve been here for three months, I’ve spent a lot of time on the water, and I’ve seen how people actually use their boats. Honestly, I now understand why having a yacht in Saint-Tropez makes so much sense.

Everything you need to know before making Saint-Tropez your home port and why your next yacht should be here.

For many yacht owners in Asia, the Mediterranean represents something very different from boating at home.

There are few places in the world as instantly recognisable as Saint-Tropez.

The old harbour is filled with yachts. The pastel façades of the village. Long lunches that somehow turn into afternoon drinks. The boutiques of Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermès. The beach clubs of Pampelonne. A chilled glass of rosé under the Mediterranean sun.

Saint-Tropez has become an icon of summer.

But after spending a few months here, I realised that there is another side to Saint-Tropez  and you really discover it from the water.

Imagine arriving in the morning and stepping aboard your own yacht. You leave the harbour behind and, within minutes, the atmosphere changes completely.

The water becomes clearer. The coastline opens up. You find your own spot to anchor and go for a swim.

Later, you might cruise towards Pampelonne for lunch, head back to the village for some shopping, or simply stay on the water until 9pm, anchored in Les Canoubiers, watching the late summer sun set behind the iconic Brigitte Bardot house.

And the next morning, you can do something completely different.

That, for me, is when I started to understand the real appeal of owning a yacht in Saint-Tropez.

Saint-Tropez as Your Yacht’s Home Port

What makes Saint-Tropez particularly interesting as a home port is that you are not limited to Saint-Tropez.

The Gulf itself offers an incredible variety of places to explore, from Pampelonne and Ramatuelle to the bays around Les Canoubiers, Sainte-Maxime and the Esterel.

Then there is the wider Riviera.

Cannes is an easy trip by boat. The Lérins Islands are perfect for a day on the water. Monaco can become a weekend destination. Further west, Porquerolles and Port-Cros offer a completely different experience, while Corsica opens the door to longer Mediterranean escapes.

The great thing is that you don’t have to plan everything months in advance.

You can wake up in Saint-Tropez and decide where you want to go.

And that is also why I don’t think you need a huge yacht to enjoy this lifestyle.

A 40–50ft yacht can be perfect for days on the water, swimming, entertaining friends and spontaneous lunches.

Around 60–70ft, you have the space and accommodation to comfortably spend several nights onboard and explore further.

At around 80ft, you can start looking at longer cruising and extended Mediterranean trips.

The right yacht is really about how you want to use it.

Do you want to spend long summer days at anchor with family and friends? Do you want to stay onboard for a weekend? Do you want to cruise to Cannes and Monaco? Or do you want to disappear for a week and explore further?

Once you know that, choosing the right yacht becomes much easier.

More Than a Summer Destination

There is another reason Saint-Tropez works so well as a home port: the Riviera is not only about beaches and summer holidays.

Some of the Mediterranean’s most iconic events happen here.

The Cannes Film Festival. The Monaco Grand Prix. The Loro Piana Regatta. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

These events bring together the worlds of yachting, sport, fashion, entertainment and business, and they are experiences that are simply different when you have your own boat.

Your yacht becomes your base.

You can arrive in Cannes by sea during the Film Festival instead of sitting in traffic. Spend a weekend in Monaco for the Grand Prix. Watch the racing during the Loro Piana Regatta. Or be right in the middle of the action during Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

And when the event is over, you don’t have to leave.

You simply head back to your yacht.

This is when having a yacht here starts to feel less like a luxury and more like the obvious way to experience the Riviera.

And What About the Practical Side?

Of course, owning a yacht in the South of France is not only about the lifestyle.

There is a very practical side to it, particularly if you are based in Asia.

Saint-Tropez and the surrounding area have a mature boating infrastructure, with marinas, shipyards, maintenance companies, suppliers, captains, crew and specialist marine services all within easy reach.

The main season generally runs from May to October, which also works surprisingly well for Asian owners.

You can spend the winter and spring in Asia, come to Europe for the summer, and know that your yacht is being looked after locally when you are away.

This is where having the right management team becomes important.

Ownership Without the Headaches

Owning a yacht thousands of kilometres from where you live can sound complicated.

It doesn’t have to be.

At ASIAMARINE Saint-Tropez, our role is to take care of the practical side of ownership so that you can concentrate on actually enjoying the boat.

This can include:

  • Berth and marina arrangements
  • Yacht management
  • Cleaning and preparation
  • Routine maintenance
  • Technical support
  • Crew recruitment and placement
  • Charter management
  • Administrative and operational coordination

The crew structure can also be adapted to how you actually use the yacht.

If you are only spending a few weeks in France each year, you may not need a large permanent crew year-round. The idea is to build the operation around your lifestyle, rather than making your lifestyle adapt to the yacht.

What Happens When You’re Back in Asia?

This is probably one of the first questions I would ask if I were considering buying a yacht in Saint-Tropez.

What happens to it when I go home?

For the right yacht, a carefully managed charter programme can be part of the answer.

When you are not using the boat, selected charter periods can generate additional revenue and help offset some of the annual costs of ownership, including berth, maintenance, crew and operating expenses.

It is not about putting the yacht on charter every possible week.

It is about finding the right balance between owner use, yacht care and charter.

For an owner based in Asia, having that flexibility can make a real difference.

Why I Think Saint-Tropez Makes Sense for Asian Owners

After three months here, I think the biggest surprise for me is how easy the lifestyle can actually be.

You don’t necessarily need to spend months cruising the Mediterranean.

You can come for a few weeks in summer and still make the most of having your own boat.

You arrive in Europe, your yacht is ready, your crew is organised, and you simply decide what you want to do.

One day it might be lunch in Pampelonne.

The next, Cannes.

A few days later, Monaco.

And sometimes, you don’t go anywhere at all. You just stay at anchor in one of the beautiful bays around Saint-Tropez.

That flexibility is what makes the concept particularly attractive for owners living in Asia.

My Personal Take

Before spending this season here, I understood Saint-Tropez as a destination.

After living here and spending so much time on the water, I see it differently.

I now understand why so many people choose to keep their boats here year after year.

It isn’t simply because Saint-Tropez is beautiful.

It is because having a boat here changes what you can do with your time.

You can come for the big events, spend the weekend with friends, take the family out for the day, disappear along the coast for a few nights  or simply decide on a Tuesday morning that you want to go for a swim.

And everything is right there.

That is probably the biggest thing I have taken away from my time here.

Once you experience Saint-Tropez this way, having your own yacht here starts to feel like the natural next step.
